How to Choose Outdoor Furniture for the UAE Heat: Materials, Cushions and Care

Outdoor furniture in the UAE works harder than almost anywhere else. Summer surfaces can get too hot to touch, humidity climbs along the coast, and fine dust settles on everything after a windy day. The right material, the right cushions and a simple care routine make the difference between a set you enjoy for many seasons and one that fades, cracks or sits unused. This guide explains what to look for, compares the materials we use in our outdoor sofa sets and sun loungers, and shows how to look after each one.
What the UAE climate does to outdoor furniture
- UV and heat: strong sunlight fades colours and can make low-grade plastics brittle. Look for furniture described as UV resistant.
- Humidity and night dew: on coastal balconies and around pools, moisture settles overnight. Materials that do not absorb water dry quickly in the morning.
- Dust and sand: smooth, wipe-clean surfaces are much easier to keep looking new than deep textures or loose weaves.
- Surface temperature: dark, dense surfaces hold heat. Lighter colours, open slats and breathable slings stay more comfortable at midday.

Rattan-style polypropylene: the Havana sofa sets

Cushions: seat only, or seat and back?
Most Havana sets come in two versions. Seat cushions keep the look light and are quicker to bring inside. Seat and back cushions turn the set into a proper lounge for long evenings, and on the 5- and 7-seater sets the cushions are removable. A few rules help cushions last in the UAE:
- Bring cushions inside or into a storage box when you will not use them for a few days, and before a dust storm.
- Stand cushions on their edge after rain or heavy dew so they dry faster.
- Brush off sand and dust before it works into the fabric, and spot clean with mild soap and water.
- In peak summer, keep cushions out of the midday sun when you are not using them to slow down fading.
Care tips through the year
Polypropylene and rattan-style frames
Wipe down with water and a little mild soap, then rinse. Avoid solvents and abrasive pads, which dull the surface. A soft brush gets dust out of the woven texture.
Textilene slings
Rinse with fresh water after pool use to remove chlorine and salt, and let the sling dry in the air. Mild soap and a soft brush remove sunscreen marks.
Eucalyptus wood
Wipe the slats with a damp cloth and let them dry fully. Wood weathers naturally outdoors; a cover or a shaded spot in summer, and an occasional outdoor wood oil, help keep the warm finish.
Placement
Shade from a pergola, umbrella or covered terrace reduces heat and fading for any material. Leave a little space between furniture and walls so air can circulate and dew can dry.
